What is Birth Trauma?
Birth trauma is the distress that a mother undergoes during the birth of their child. This can be either physical or emotional, and it can have to do with the various parts of their pregnancy journey, including but not limited to the act of birth. Often, mothers have an idea of how things are going to go. It is normal to feel disappointed when the reality does not match expectations. However, a traumatic birth experience refers to how the mother is left feeling due to the labor and delivery. Birth trauma can emerge immediately during the event or develop sometime after the event. Unfortunately, a traumatic birth experience is often missed, especially in the case of an “overall good outcome.” While a healthy baby and healthy mom is the goal, sometimes important emotional trauma is overlooked.
Risk Factors for Birth Trauma
The experience did not go as planned and significantly fell short of your expectations
Experiencing complications during labor
Needing an intervention during labor such as forceps, vacuum delivery, or an unplanned cesarean section
Mom or baby suffering a birth injury (e.g., significant tearing during delivery requiring intervention)
Baby needing medical attention after delivery, including NICU stays
Difficulty with advocacy around your needs during the process
Feeling trapped or having no choice during the delivery process
Birth Trauma is Fairly Common
According to Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth (PATTCh) “Between 25 and 34 percent of women report that their births were traumatic.” While 1 in 4 women may experience birth trauma, traumatic birth unfortunately is rarely discussed but the effects of it can linger for years. You may find yourself feeling shame, anger, or resentment. You may ruminate over events and replay them in your head which brings negative feelings and emotions up from what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life.

Can You Get Traumatized from Giving Birth?
Yes, it is possible to get traumatized from giving birth. Some women experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth. Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts about the birth. If you are experiencing any of PTSD symptoms or postpartum depression, it is important to seek help from a therapist or counselor.
How Do You Overcome Birth Trauma?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to overcome birth trauma may vary from person to person. However, some tips on how to overcome birth trauma include seeking professional help, talking about your experiences with others, and practicing self-care.
What is Birth Trauma Therapy?
Birth Trauma Therapy is a type of therapy that helps people deal with the emotional effects of birth. It can help people who have experienced difficulties during childbirth, such as difficulty giving birth, feeling pressure or pain, or having an emergency C-section. Birth Trauma Therapy can also help people who have experienced emotional difficulties after giving birth, such as feeling overwhelmed, feeling unsupported, or feeling that their needs were not met.
Why Can’t I Just Talk to My Friends or Family About My Issues?
While talking to friends and family can certainly help, it is important to talk further to a trained professional who can skillfully and without bias, address the difficulties you may be experiencing. Talking to a trained professional means that you will be guaranteed someone who has both academic experience and practical knowledge to be able to help you implement proven strategies to promote healing.
What Will Other People Say About Me?
In our society, there is a lot of stigma surrounding mental health and getting treatment in order to better your mental health. Although you may be scared to be judged by others for engaging in supports, the reality is that more people do it than you would expect! Therapy is just one tool in your tool box of achieving peace and being able to move forward in an intentional way. Your mental health and self-care is top priority as we understand how much of mental health informs physical health and our relationships as well as overall functioning. If you are even considering getting mental health support from a trained professional, err on the side of caution and try a couple of sessions. The worst that can happen is that you may not fully engage but through this process you will develop more insights about your needs, which is valuable in itself. As the saying goes, we miss 100 percent of the shots we don’t take!
